Description
Bernard Haitink was always a familiar face in London, where he was chief conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967 to 1979 and also performed at prestigious British opera houses such as Covent Garden and Glyndebourne. This second part of a three-part series featuring Haitink's complete recordings for Decca and Philips focuses on his years in London. The recordings span a period of two decades, from 1967 (Dvorák with Heinrich Schiff) to 1986 (Rachmaninoff with Vladimir Ashkenazy). Many of the characteristics of Haitink's recordings at the Concertgebouw can be found in these performances with the LPO. His unobtrusive authority – in which he lets the score speak for itself – was aptly summarized by Gramophone: "At no point do you notice that you are conducting. It simply *is*."
